Janice Mason

Janice and Ian both grew up around water in Victoria, BC. Although they shared similar interests and numerous friends and acquaintances, it was the Race to Alaska that actually brought them together. They first met on the dock in Port Townsend just days before the start of R2AK 2016 – Ian a member of Team Fly and Janice crewing on Team Sistership.

Following the 2016 race, they joined forces to form Team Oaracle, and in 2017 were the first team to complete the Race to Alaska under oar power alone.  Viewing the coast from sailboat and rowboat wasn’t quite enough so they hopped into a kayak to do it yet again, facing forward for 2018.

Both are accomplished “Repeat Offenders”:  Ian is the only R2AK participant to complete the event in all four years;  Janice has done it three times. And to add an extra challenge, they started off this year’s adventure by rowing the Seventy48, finishing a respectable 10th - not bad for a couple of 58-year olds!  Will they R2AK again?
