World's Fastest Traditional Sailing Canoes
The seldom-visited Ninigo Islands are a group of 31 tiny islands set in 7 atolls that are part of the Manus Province of Papua New Guinea. The Ninigo group features healthy lagoons that make for stunning anchorages set alongside pretty, neat villages. The Seimat people who live there are warm wonderful people with a still-flourishing sailing canoe culture that allows them to sustainably live on little except pluck, hard work and love. This is the story of the people, their amazing canted rectangular-boom lugsail, single-outrigger sailing canoes, and the culturally-rich and highly-competitive event dubbed The Great Ninigo Islands Canoe Race.

Introduction to Wind & Wave Concepts & Charts
This seminar first discusses the fundamentals involved with wind & swell wave development, propagation, & decay.  Specifically:
  • We will define & illustrate what an ocean wave is & its characteristic.
  • We will discuss the dominant role that wind energy has in creating “wind waves” & what happens when “wind waves” leave their generating area as “swell waves”.
  • We will further discuss the critical parameters of wind direction & speed, duration, & fetch as it impacts both “wind & swell waves” (combined is known as “sea state”).
  • A boater, whether cruising inside the San Francisco, or sailing coastal along the west coast of the U.S. exposed to the North Pacific Ocean, or blue water cruising further offshore in the North Pacific Ocean (or any other ocean), needs to understand how differing waves characteristics will impact their vessel for safe keeping.
Finally, for offshore boaters, it is also important to differentiate between regional & full
ocean wind & wave charts, depicted in “feet” versus “meters” when discussing & utilizing
the U.S. Ocean Prediction Center wind & wave analyses & forecasts charts.

Small Boats, Big Adventures
What's the big deal with small boats? Marty Loken, boatbuilder, organizer of events for the Port Townsend Pocket Yachters group and Associate Editor of Small Craft Advisor magazine--who's been boating and cruising Northwest waters for almost 75 years--looks at the practical side of small-boat ownership along with often-lyrical experiences that can be enhanced aboard a smaller cruising boat. Included will be a review of many different small-boat designs; the buy-new-vs.-restore question; how to learn more about small cruising boats, and where to consider trailering your camp-cruising boat once you've  decided to join the world of smaller-boat owners. ("Small Boat," in this case, refers to any sailboat, rowing boat or powerboat that is trailerable--generally up to about 24 feet on deck, but mostly in the 14'-22' range.)
