While machines can easily beat hand tools for basic dimensioning tasks, they can’t
stand up to their versatility in shaping and fitting the complex angles and
curves often encountered in boatbuilding. Machines also can’t compete in speed
or quality of surface with a properly set up hand plane to smooth wood to a
mirror finish. This presentation demonstrates precision planing techniques with
a try plane; smoothing surfaces with a smooth plane; and shaping chamfers and
rolling bevels with drawknife and spokeshave.
